Westminster City Council launches HMO checker which allows residents in Westminster to discover if the property they live in is licensed correctly.
The checker aims to help the council to identify rogue landlords who are renting unlicensed Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMOs). Residents who discover they are living in an unlicensed HMO could be entitled to a rent repayment of up to 12 months’ rent.
HMOs include buildings where facilities are shared, but can also include buildings divided into self-contained flats.
If someone is sharing a house or flat in a non-purpose built block, with five or more people, forming two or more households, then the property will usually require a licence.
